Handling Household Hazerdous Waste

How to handle household hazardous wastes

What to do with leftover paint

If you can't use it up or give it to someone who can, then dispose of it properly.

To dispose of latex paint:

  • Dry it out and throw it in your regular trash.
  • For small quantities, take off the lid (away from children and pets) and let it dry.
  • For larger quantities, mix kitty litter or saw dust in it and let dry. Or pour layers on newspapers in a cardboard box, allowing each layer to dry.
  • Be sure to take the lid off when you discard in the trash so waste handlers know it's dry.

To dispose of oil based paint:

  • All oil based paint or paint containing lead must be brought to a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Clean-up event.
  • Or it can be taken to the Regional Collection Center (RCC) in Bondurant - free for residential customers and at a small fee for businesses that are small quantity generators (CESQGs). Call 1-888-603-CREW for more information.

What should you do with old batteries?

Some batteries should be recycled; others can be discarded in the trash. It's important to know the difference!

These batteries MAY NOT be discarded in the trash:

  • Lead Acid auto batteries: Return to retailer when purchasing new ones - they cannot be thrown away! You may also bring your old auto batteries to the landfill at no cost. Call 641-828-8545 for information.
  • Household batteries: These batteries should only be brought to a householdhazardous waste collection site or returned to manufacturers or retailers:
    • Mercuric oxide - non-rechargeable batteries found in hearing aids
    • Nickel-cadmium (NiCad) - rechargeable batteries used in kitchen appliances, power tools, and other household applications.
    • Small lead acid - rechargeable batteries used in camcorders, lap top computers, cell phones, etc

These batteries MAY be safely discarded in the trash:

  • Alkaline and carbon zinc - These include batteries used in toys, radios, flashlights, and other common household applications.

For information on battery disposal or for the location of a drop-off site near you, call the South Central Iowa Solid Waste Agency at: 641-828-8545.

Hazards in your kitchen and bathroom

Cleaning products such as oven cleaners, drain cleaners, polishes, tub and tile cleaners, disinfectants and ammonia-based cleaners are some of the hazardous chemicals found in your home.

How do you know if they're hazardous? Look for the words DANGER, WARNING,CAUTION on the label. Danger is the most hazardous; caution is less hazardous.

Other words to look for:

  • "Harmful or fatal if swallowed" or "Poison"
  • "Keep out of the reach of children"
  • "toxic"
  • "flammable" or "ignitable"
  • "corrosive" or "avoid skin contact"

How should you handle hazardous household cleaners? READ AND FOLLOW ALL LABEL DIRECTIONS! Don't mix chemicals and never discard on the ground or down the drain. (If the product is designed to go down the drain as part of its natural use, it can be flushed down with running water.)

If you can't use up or give away these cleaning products, bring them to a household hazardous waste clean up event.

For more information call the South Central Iowa Solid Waste Agency at 641-828-8545 or the Regional Collection Center at 1-888-603-CREW.

Hazards in your garage

Look for these items in your garage that require special handling and disposal:

  • Gasoline and kerosene
  • Carburetor cleaner
  • Used motor oil
  • Windshield Washer Fluid
  • Antifreeze
  • Driveway sealer
  • Brake and starter fluid
  • Car polish and wax

You should use up or give away what you can, or bring what you don't use to the mobile Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Clean Up Crew events or directly to the Regional Collection Center (RCC) in Bondurant.

Motor oil, antifreeze and lead acid batteries may not be brought to the mobile Clean Up Crew events, but may be brought directly to the SCISWA landfill or the RCC. Call 1-888-603-CREW for information.

Used motor oil and filters and auto batteries may be brought to the Landfill (641-828-8545) at no cost. Or check with your local service station to see if they accept these items.

For more information call the South Central Iowa Solid Waste Agency at 641-828-8545 or the RCC at 1-888-603-CREW.

Do you know what's hazardous in your garden?

Chemicals used in the garden and yard that are hazardous include:

  • Lawn and plant fertilizers
  • Weed killers and insecticides
  • Gopher, rat and mouse poisons
  • Pool chemicals

The best way to dispose of any excess yard and garden chemicals is to use them up according to directions. Do not use banned pesticides.

Small quantities of these chemicals will be accepted at Household Hazardous Waste mobile clean up events if they are from your home.

Small businesses and farms should call the Regional Collection Center at 1-888-603-CREW for information on the RCC Small Business Program.

Do you know what's hazardous in your workshop?

Your workshop is full of potentially hazardous wastes that require special handling. Some of these items are:

  • Paint removers/thinners
  • Acids/bases
  • Varnishes/shellac
  • Contact cement
  • Stains
  • Petroleum based adhesives
  • Oil-based paint
  • Epoxy
  • Roofing tar
  • Caulk, labeled flammable

If you cannot use up or give away these items and they come from your home, you may bring them to a Clean Up Crew mobile collection event or take them directly to the Regional Collection Center (RCC) in Bondurant. Call 1-888-603-CREW for information.

If you are a business/farm that is a Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generator (generates less than 220 lbs per month), you are eligible for the RCC Business Program. Call 1-888-603-CREW for details.
