Small Business Services

Hazardous waste from businesses must be handled differently than hazardous waste from households because of the quantity of specialized materials that businesses tend to accumulate. Federal regulations require special handling. Because of this, a fee is charged and the materials can only be accepted by pre-arrangement at the Permanent Drop-off or at the Regional Collection Center (RCC) in Bondurant.

Review the categories below to determine which hazardous waste generator your business qualifies as and what route you will need to follow to dispose of your hazardous waste.

Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generator (CESQG)
A business that produces 220 pounds (~ 25 gallons) of hazardous waste or less per month and never stores more than 2,200 pounds of waste on site at any time. Contact SCISWA at 641-828-8545 or RCC at 1-888-603-CREW.

Small Quantity Generator (SQG)
A business that generates 220 to 2,200 pounds of non acute hazardous waste per month and never accumulates 13,200 pounds or more at a time. This business must use a licensed disposal contractor. Contact the RCC for assistance in identifying a contractor.

Large Quantity Generator (LQG)
A business that generates 2,200 pounds or more of hazardous waste in a month. This applies to facilities that generate or accumulate 2.2 pounds or more of an acutely hazardous* or severely toxic waste. This business must use a licensed disposal contractor. Contact the RCC for assistance in identifying a contractor.

*Acutely hazardous wastes are found on the EPA P-List (PDF; 144 KB).
