Programming and Tours
2006-2007 Education Programs
LET'S TALK TRASH
Grades: K - 12
Where does the apple core go after I throw it away? What do we do with the old shingles my dad took off the roof of our house? Would it be better to burn our trash rather than send it to the landfill?
These and many other questions can be answered when your students participate in this activity. A short program will help students understand what happens to garbage once it leaves their homes. Students will help construct a "mini" landfill to use in the classroom for post-visit activities.
RARIN' TO RECYCLE
Grades: K - 5
Participants will get fired up about recycling in their homes, school, and community by running a recycling relay, watching a fun and educational video that follows a tin can through the recycling process, and viewing products made from recycled materials.
This program can be incorporated with a visit to the local recycling center to see first-hand how recycling works in their community!
AGATHA'S FEATHER BED
Grades: Pre-K to 2nd
The book "Agatha's Feather Bed" by Carman Deedy will help show students where things come from. A "globe-trotting" activity after the story will further enforce the importance of saving the world's natural resources and the need for everyone to recycle. Examples of natural resources and locally recyclable materials will also be shown.
This program can be incorporated with a visit to the local recycling center to see first-hand how recycling works in their community!
DON'T DUMP IT!
Grades: 3 - 8
Hazardous waste is present in every home as well as in our schools. Participants will learn the definition of hazardous waste, why it is bad, and what we can do to reduce it in our homes and community. View an informative power point presentation followed by a hands-on activity which will demonstrate the effects of hazardous waste and materials. Students may have an opportunity to create safer, alternative products to replace the more harmful materials.
LANDFILL TOUR
All Ages
Landfill visitors learn about garbage, recycling and other environmental issues on this driving tour. Tours are weather-dependent; groups must supply own transportation.
(Tour can be incorporated with 'Let's Talk Trash' or 'Rarin' to Recycle' activity.)
RECYCLE CENTER TOUR
All Ages
Visitors to the recycling center will see what happens to household items that are brought in for recycling and where they go from there. Learn which items are accepted and why as well as what residents can do to help with the recycling process. Tours are weather dependent: groups must supply own transportation.
(Tour can be incorporated with 'Rarin' to Recycle' or 'Agatha's Feather Bed' activity.)
