Agency Results from a Decade of Hazardous Waste Collection

SCISWA Board Chairman Roger Schletzbaum, Marion County Engineer, accepts the Certificate of Participation from Kyle Fischer, Mobile Program Coordinator at Metro Waste Authority. The South Central Solid Waste Agency was awarded with a Certificate of Excellence from Metro Waste Authority in accordance with 10 years of participation in the Household Hazardous Waste collection program. This program gathers various items that need special disposal in order to prevent harm to individuals and the environment.

The achievement certificate was presented to Board Chairman Roger Schletzbaum, Marion County Engineer. “This is a significant milestone for the Agency and the community. We hope to continue to expand the program over the next ten years as well as build on the existing public awareness,” commented Schletzbaum.

Education and Outreach Specialist Amber Alley found some areas of improvement for the program based on the past results. Alley states, “There are some numbers, like cell phones, that I would really like to see increase. Most of us get a new phone every two or three years, so I know there are plenty out there that could be collected through local events and our satellite shed.”

Residents can get involved by simply storing hazardous items until their community’s next collection event. The annual Pella event will be held on April 19th from 9 a.m. to noon. More details will be announced as they are available. Also, the satellite shed located at the landfill will re-open in early March for collection. Those citizens interested in bringing their hazardous waste to the site should contact the landfill for an appointment on the first Saturday of each month. Small businesses and those with questions should contact Alley for more details on the program at 641-828-8545 ext. 3 or aalley@sciswa.org.
