Board Minutes

South Central Iowa Solid Waste Agency
Minutes of the Meeting
March 12, 2008

Vice-Chairman Mike Beary (Monroe Co) called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m. with the following members present: Doug Shutts (Poweshiek Co.) and Dwight Mater (Marion County Alternate).

Also in attendance: Kathy Vander Meiden (Midwest Sanitation) and Mike Smith (Foth Infrastructure). Staff Leslie Sedlock, Milo McCombs, Amber Alley and Sara Bixby.

Moved by Shutts, seconded by Mater to approve the March 2008 agenda as amended. All ayes.

Moved by Shutts, seconded by Mater to approve the Minutes of February 2008. All ayes.

Moved by Mater, seconded by Shutts to approve the financial report. All ayes.

Moved by Shutts, seconded by Mater to approve the bills presented. All ayes. Bixby explained tonnage fee reports along with the payments to DNR and RASWC to board members.

Mike Smith (Foth Infrastructure & Environment) discussed the current status of ongoing landfill permitting and planning activities with board members.

Bixby asked the board to stay open all day on Presidents’ Day rather than just a half day. The change to Presidents’ Day will be brought back to the April board meeting as an action item.

A Request for Proposals for two new transfer trailers was sent out and is due back March 25th at 4p.m. The purchase of two new trailers will give the Transfer Station one additional trailer to use as a back-up during peak delivery months.

Moved by Mater, seconded Shutts to approve a one year contract extension with The Write Place for website services. All ayes.

McCombs (landfill foreman) reported staff traveled to Metro Waste Authority to observe a litter picker that Metro is using for litter control.

Alley (Outreach Specialist) reported the HHW shed is open and Grinnell will hold its HHW event April 5th, Chariton April 7th and Pella April 19th. A complete Outreach Specialist report is on file with the minutes.

Sedlock (Business Manager) reported that Iowa Communities Assurance Pool (ICAP) is giving sexual harassment classes at no expense to ICAP members. A complete list of classes offered at no expense is available by contacting ICAP.

Bixby submitted her Directors report and reviewed it with board members. Bixby reported on the State Auditors report (Hardin County Solid Waste Commission). April 15th is Lake Red Rock clean-up day. A complete report is on file with the minutes.

Moved by Mater, seconded by Shutts to adjourn the meeting at 10:25 a.m. All ayes.
